Golden Guernsey Goat Characteristics

The Golden Guernsey goat is a breed of dairy goat from the Bailiwick of Guernsey on the Channel Islands. Exact origins of these goats are unknown, but the breed began to evolve into it's current form a long time ago. Oberhasli and Syrian goat breeds are believed to be the ancestors of the Golden Guernsey goat. Some people also believe that 'the breed was developed from local breeds mated to Anglo-Nubian and Swiss goat breeds during a period from 1920 to 1950.

Golden Guernsey Goat Characteristics

The Golden Guernsey goats are medium sized animals with very beautiful appearance. As the name suggests, these animals generally appear in golden color with hues ranging from pale blond to deep bronze. Compared to other British dairy goats, the Golden Guernsey goats are smaller and more fine-boned animals, and there is great variety in coat length.

The bucks generally have very splendid horns, only a few bucks don't have horns. Average body height of the mature bucks is around or up to 71 cm at the withers. And average body height of the mature does is around 66 cm at the withers. The mature bucks on average can weight around 68 kg. And average live body weight of the mature does is around 54 kg.

The breed is not among the highest milk producing dairy goat breeds, but they are efficient milkers as compared to their relatively smaller size. Average milk yield of a doe is around 3.16 kg daily. Milk of the Golden Guernsey goat is of very good quality, containing around 2.81 percent protein, and around 3.72 percent fat content. The milk is excellent choice for cheese making.
