Spanish Goat Characteristics & Farming Information





The Spanish goat is one of the oldest goat breeds. It is also called as the Scrub goat or Brush goat. Previously it was kept as a dual-purpose animal, and used for both meat and milk production. Once the breed was also kept for clearing brush and other undesirable plant species from pasture land. But currently, the breed is raised mainly for meat production. In the 1980s, the Boer goat which is another popular meat goat breed has overtaken Spanish Goats for meat production.

As the name suggests, the Spanish goats actually originated from Spain. And today, they are available throughout the world and popular as a meat goat breed. Spanish explorers brought landrace goats from their native lands to the Caribbean Islands, around the 16th century. Some landrace Spanish goats exist in their native territory of Spain but survive through the bloodlines brought to the New World.

Today, total number of purebred Spanish goats are threatened, and the breed appear on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy watch list. This is possible due to the amount of crossbreeding, and most of the Spanish goats found today are crossbred animals. However, read some more information about Spanish goats below.

Spanish Goat Characteristics


The Spanish goats are very beautiful animals, and they appear in a wide color variation. They can actually be found in almost any color that is found in domestic goats. Both bucks and does are horned. The bucks can sometimes have large and twisted horns. Their ears are large which are held horizontally and forward next to the head. Some goats can have long ears just like the Nubian goats have. Average live body weight of the mature goat can vary from 23 to 90 kg.

Feeding


The Spanish goats are excellent foragers. They can forage well on local plants and other greens. They can survive and do very well even on low quality food, and they are great for controlling bush (although their growth rate is relatively slower in this system). But they can do very well and grow much faster if they are provided with quality supplementary feeds. Also provide them with plenty of clean and fresh water as per their demand.




Breeding


The Spanish goats are very good breeders. They can breed throughout the year. They are often used for crossbreeding with other goat breeds. Purebred Spanish goats have been crossbred with imported goat breeds for improving meat production also for cashmere. Most of the crossbred kids show a superb hybrid vigor. The does are prolific and they produce enough milk for their kids. And the survival rate of the kids is very good.

Abilities


The Spanish goats are very strong and hardy animals. They are able to survive and thrive under adverse agroclimatic conditions, with only limited management inputs. They are excellent as range animals, because of their small udder and teats. They are very active animals and can be flighty sometimes. They are also believed to be relatively tolerant of internal parasites.

Uses


The Spanish goats were kept as a dual-purpose animals in the past. But today, they are raised mainly for meat production. They are also often used for crossbreeding with other goat breeds
