Toggenburg Goat Characteristics & Farming Information





The Toggenburg goat is one of the oldest known dairy goat breeds. It is also called Toggs, Toggenburger, Toggenburger Ziege, Chèvre du Toggenbourg and Capra del Toggenburgo. It was originated from Switzerland. It's name derives from that of the Toggenburg region of the Canton of St. Gallen (from where it is thought to have originated). Currently the Toggenburg goat is available throughout the world and it is among the most productive breeds of dairy goat.

The Toggenburg goat is a very old breed, and it is the traditional breed of the Toggenburg and Werdenberg regions of the Canton of St. Gallen in eastern Switzerland. The herd-book was started in 1890. However, read some more information about this Swiss goat breed below.

Toggenburg Goat Characteristics


The Toggenburg goats are medium sized animals with distinctive and very beautiful appearance. Their coat color ranges from light brown to mouse grey, with white Swiss markings to the face, lower legs and tail area. Both bucks and does can be either horned or hornless.

Hair of the Toggenburg goat is short or medium in length. The hair is also soft, fine and lying flat. Their ears are erect and carried forward. Tassels may be present. The facial lines may be dished or straight, never roman. Average live body weight of the mature bucks is around 75 kg, and the does weight slightly less than the bucks. Average live body weight of the mature does is around 55 kg.

Feeding


The Toggenburg goats are good grazers. They do very well and produce more milk if they are provided with enough greens. Supplementary dairy goat feeds are also very good for these goats. Also provide your goats with enough water for keeping them healthy and productive.




Breeding


Toggenburg goats are excellent breeders. The does have well developed udder, and they are also known for their excellent udder development. They are often crossed with meat goats such as Boer or Kalahari Red goat for producing fast growing kids.

Abilities


The Toggenburg goats are considered as a very hardy dairy goat breed. They can perform very well in cooler conditions.

Uses


The Toggenburgs are dairy goats, and they are mainly used for milk production. The minimum milk yield of a doe is around 740 kg per lactation. Their milk is of good quality containing around 3.56 percent fat, and around 2.90 percent protein.

The Toggenburg goats are generally friendly in behavior. They have comparatively quiet and gentle temperament. Although some animals tend to be more strited and less docile than other goat breeds. But most of the animals are friendly, and they are even good for raising as pets.
