Angora Goat Characteristics & Farming Information

The Angora goats are among the most popular and well known fiber goat breeds. They were originated in the district of Angora in Asia Minor. They produce very good quality, lustrous fiber known as 'Mohair'. The Angora goat breed was actually named after Ankara, Turkey (which was historically known as Angora).

The Angora goat is a very old breed, which dates back prior to early biblical history. Mention is made of the use of Mohair at the time of Moses (some time between 1571 and 1451 B.C). And early in the 19th century, the Mohair became a valuable commercial product.

The Turks crossed the Angora goat with common stock to increase the poundage of salable hair, in order to increase the supply of Mohair available for export to the European countries. Probably there was no effort to keep the original animals separate. And the general increase in size and vigor of the goats in their native area was no doubt, partially the result of this infusion of other blood.

The Angora goats were distributed to different countries throughout the world. And today, the USA and South Africa are the two largest producers of Mohair. Other notable Mohair producing countries are Argentina, Great Britain, New Zealand and Turkey.

Angora Goat Characteristics

The Angora goats are very beautiful animals with distinct sheep like appearance. They appear in a wide variety of coloration. Their common coloration includes shades of red through tans and browns, gray through black and also combinations of many other colors.

Both bucks and does are generally horned, with the bucks having pronounced spiral to the horn (which comes back and away from the head). In mature bucks, the horns can sometimes reach up to 2 feet in length. But the does have comparatively short and much smaller horns which has only a very slight tendency to spiral. And the horns of the does seldom exceeds 9-10 inches.

The Angora goats generally have heavy and drooping ears. Their body is deep and uniform in depth. They have straight back, and well sprung rib. They have wide chest, straight legs and their rear quarters generally show ample development.

There is considerable variation in the size of the Angora goats. Average live body weight of the mature bucks can vary from 82 to 102 kg. And the mature doe's average live body weight can vary from 45 to 50 kg.


The Angora goats are excellent browsers and they love grazing, just like many other common goat breeds. They love to eat greens, corn, plants, leaves etc. They also prefer lots of roughage including weeds, leaves, woody shrubs etc. If they are allowed to roam freely, they will hold the tree branches down and eat leaves, standing on their hind legs.

In case of raising Angora goats commercially, you will need to supplement their diet with nutritious feeds. You will need to ensure availability of minerals, protein, energy and vitamins in their diet. Angora goats generally require more protein, and their ideal diet should contain about 20 percent protein.

Angora does require quality feeding during pregnancy and prior to kidding. However, you also need to provide your animals with adequate clean and fresh water for keeping them healthy and productive.


Goats are good breeders naturally, and the Angora goats are not an exception. They are also good breeders and can breed well naturally. You will need to choose healthy and strong bucks for breeding your Angora does. And the breeding bucks generally require special care for staying productive. One quality buck generally can breed numerous does.


The Angora goats are very strong and hardy animals. They can survive and do well in almost all climates. They can also survive well on low quality feeding or grazing conditions. Today, they are available in almost everywhere throughout the world. They generally require minimal caring and facilities for surviving.
