Barbari Goat Characteristics & Farming Information

The Barbari goat is relatively a smaller sized breed. It is also known by some other names such as Bari, Sai Bari, Thori Bari, Titri Bari, Wadi Bari etc. It is of Indian origin and mainly distributed in the states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in India. It is one of the 20 classified breeds in India and is most commonly found in the north-western and semi-arid regions. And main breeding tracts of the Barbari goat are Agra, Aligarh and Etah districts of Uttar Pradesh, and Bharatpur district of Rajasthan.

Today, total population of the Barbari goat is more than 2.4 million, and a large number of them are available in Pakistan. In Pakistan, most of the population are distributed in the Punjab and Sindh province. And the breed is also popular in some other countries such as Mauritius, Vietnam and Nepal. Barbari Goat Characteristics

The Barbari goats are relatively smaller sized animals compared to most other Indian goat breeds. The mature buck's height is around 71 cm at the withers, and the mature doe's height is around 56 cm at the withers. They appear in compact form but very beautiful in appearance. They generally appear in brownish red color with white spots. But solid colored Barbari goats are also common.

The coat of the Barbari goat is short. Their head is small and neat, with quite prominent orbital bone (so that their eyes appear bulging). Their ears are short, tubular, almost double, with the slit opening in front, erect, directed upward and outward. Both bucks and does generally have horns. Their horns are twisted, medium in length and directed upward and backward.

The Barbari bucks generally have a large and thick beard. The does have well set udder with conical teats. Average live body weight of the mature does is around 23 kg. The bucks are slightly larger than the does, and average live body weight of the mature bucks is around 38 kg.


The Barbari goats are mostly raised on browsing and grazing stubble of cultivated crops and tree leaves in their native area. They are often provided with grains (such as barley, maize, milets), and cultivated fooders (such as berseem, wheat straw etc.). Barbari goats generally do very well in confinement, and some farmer raise them in stall fed system.


The Barbari goats are seasonal breeders. The does are prolific and they are well known for producing triples per kidding. Both bucks and does generally reach breeding age earlier.


The Barbari goats are very strong and hardy animals, and they are very suitable for intensive goat farming system. They generally become mature earlier, and they are resistant to some common goat diseases. They have good feed to meat conversion ratio. They are well adapted to the Indian conditions, and also do well in almost all climates.


The Barbari goats are dual-purpose animals. They are reared for both meat and milk production. Average milk yield of a lactating doe is approximately 107 kg in a lactation period of about 150 days. The breed is also very good for meat production. The young bucks are generally castrated for increasing meat production.

The Barbari goats are very hardy animals, and they are well known for their good meat quality and also for multiple kids per kidding.
