Cashmere Goat Characteristics & Farming Information

The goat breeds which produce cashmere wool are called Cashmere goats. It is not a specific goat breed. Actually, any breed of goat that produces cashmere wool is called a Cashmere goat. These goats were named from their origin place in the Himalayan Region of Kashmir, India.

Cashmere goats are the producers of fine quality cashmere wool, in commercial quality and quantity. Cashmere wool is the goat's fine, soft, downy, winter undercoat. The undercoat generally grows as the day length shortens. And it is associated with an outer coat of coarse hair. And the outer coat of coarse hair is present all the year, and is generally called as guard hair. Most common goat breeds grow this two-coated fleece, even the dairy goat breeds.

China is the largest producer of Cashmere wool, contributing about 60 of total production. Afghanistan, Australia, India, Iraq, Iran, Turkey and New Zealand produce rest 40 percent Cashmere wool.

There are many goat breeds available throughout the world which produce good quality cashmere wool. Angora, Australian Cashmere goat, Changthangi Cashmere goat, Hexi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Nigora, Pygora Tibetan Plateau, Xalaa, Zhongwei etc. are some common and popular Cashmere goats.

Physical Characteristics of Cashmere Goat

Most of the Cashmere goat breeds have very beautiful appearance. But their size and body weight can vary depending on the breed. Physical characteristics, and coloration of the coat are also different depending on the type. But some common characteristics of all these goat breeds are; all of these breeds produce good quality wool, and most of the breeds are horned.

Most of the Cashmere goats are raised under extensive system. They are generally allowed to graze freely on pasture. And they take most of their diet from grazing.


Most of the Cashmere goats are good breeders. Some of them can actually breed throughout the year. Depending on the breed, the does can produce one to multiple kids per kidding.


Most of the Cashmere goats are hardy and strong animals. They can generally adapt themselves well with almost all climates, but actually do very well in their native climates. Some of the breeds can survive well on low quality feeding.


The Cashmere goats are mainly raised for their fleece. Their fleece consists of two kinds of fiber; cashmere and guard hair. Average cashmere production percentages are in the 20 percent range in most breeds.

The Cashmere goats easily maintained animals, and they generally require less caring. But one thing they generally require doing regularly is 'grooming'. You need to groom them on a regular basis for keeping them clean.
