Kutchi Goat Characteristics, Uses & Farming Information





The Kutchi goat is a dual-purpose breed which was originated from Gujarat state of India. It is named after the 'Kutch' district of Gujarat. It is a very important Indian goat breed, especially in Gujarat. The breed is also known as Kathiawari goat. Natural and main habitat of the Kutchi goat is the Kutch district in the northern Gujarat.

Apart from the Kutch region, the Kutchi goats are also found in the adjoining areas of the southern Rajasthan. Today the breed is raised for both meat and milk production in it's native area. However, read more information about this Indian goat breed below.

Kutchi Goat Characteristics


The Kutchi goats are medium to large animals with very beautiful appearance. They have compact body and relatively long legs. They appear mainly in black color with some white spots. The hair is coarse and long. They have floppy, dropping ears which are of medium size with white markings.

Face of the Kutchi goat is slightly raised, with slightly Roman nose. Both bucks and does generally have horns. Horns of the does are flat, while the bucks have relatively long and strong horns. Udder of the does is well developed, with well placed and long conical teats.

Average live body weight of the mature does is around 40 kg. And the mature buck's average live body weight can vary from 46 to 49 kg.




Feeding


The Kutchi goats are generally raised under extensive grazing system in their native regions. But they are also good for intensive goat farming system. They will grow and perform well, if provided with good quality supplementary feeds.

Breeding


The Kutchi goats are good breeders. The does generally give birth to one kid per kidding, with a twinning percentage of around 11 percent.

Abilities


The Kutchi goats are somewhat strong and hardy animals. They are mainly raised under extensive management system, and do very well in this system. They are well adapted to their native environment.

Uses


The Kutchi goats are dual-purpose animals, and they are highly valued for both meat and milk production in their native area. A doe can produce around 0.5 kg milk daily if raised in extensive system. But they can produce up to 2 kg of milk if raised in intensive system with feeding quality supplementary feeds. Kutchi goats are also used for fiber production. And they produce around 200 grams of hair per year.
